Its prototype was an abandoned train station of Heaven Village located between Shenzhen and Dongguan, China. Consisting of 11 exhibition spaces and 34 studios, this digital neighborhood was created in 2021, providing an alternative platform for creators and trans-disciplinary cultural workers to continue their creative activities even under lockdown restrictions. MetalinkArt has a special focus on exploring the functional digital twins of creative spaces, enhacing the function of physical realm by applying technological methodology. It is a dynamic experimental playground for creativities crossing geographical and academic borders. It aims to encourage the creative practices that can make positive contributions to our existing living surroundings and be spontaneously prepared for a world of Web 3.0.
"The Age of Metaverse" is the first exhibition of MetalinkArt aimed at the public, and as the name suggests, it represents a historic node in 2022 - the year of the digital twinning of art exhibition halls.
The exhibition brings together works by nine artists, including Chen Xuegang, Chen Zifeng, Dayu, Ding Siyu, Huang Huxin, Peng Libiao, Wenwu Liubin, Zhang Maoyuan, and Zhizhi. At this moment of transition between old and new, the art and cultural field is also facing renewal and reform, including the form of spaces, artists' creative modes and materials, as well as the experiences of the public. These inertial aspects of art and culture are quietly transitioning to the future era of web 3.0. The nine artists in this exhibition have practiced the transformation of art creation under the symbiosis of virtual and reality through images, installations, and VR technology.
The pandemic has greatly facilitated the digitization of various industries, including the art industry. Art spaces and artists seek ways out of restrictions, and they are exploring new paths in digitization and technology, breaking conventions and constantly blurring the boundaries between reality and virtuality, redefining the materials of creation and exhibition formats. Audiences are also constantly trying new ways of experiencing art. Perhaps in the future, art will also be redefined in cross-border practices. MetalinkArt creative neighborhood has provided creators with fertile soil for practice and welcomes more creative minds.
Taking an abandoned train station as a prototype, the creative group started this project spontaneously under the extreme covid lockdown. The digital neighbourhoods has created an alternative playground for conversations and practices. enhancing the culture activities to better support our physical world.

Artists are sometimes like old ladies scavenging in the city, tirelessly searching for these discarded 'waste' items and treating them as treasures. Indeed, art can be seen as a way of recycling and reusing the products of our human society. This behavior can be understood as a form of reflection, applying creative practices as means to reflect on collective behavior and cognition, and to initiate self-criticism and introspection through a third-person perspective. Abandoned buildings, urban villages, these “abandoned” elements in the city often carried with ready-made narratives and inherent social concerns, making them truly precious to the creators. With the assist of technology, the redeveloped value continues serving its community and Ecos with even a wider audience with the support of technology.
