Yang Tong is a curator and researcher based between Hong Kong and Frankfurt am Main. She is currently completing her MA thesis in Curatorial Studies at Goethe University Frankfurt and Städelschule. Her practice explores curating as a relational and transdisciplinary methodology situated between contemporary art, architecture, technology, and urban transformation. Working across cultural contexts in Asia, Europe, and South America, she develops exhibitions, residencies, research platforms, and collaborative projects that examine how artistic practices mediate spatial, historical, and social conditions.

Tong adopts both autoethnographic methodologies and material-based approaches within her research and curatorial practice, through which personal experience, mobility, and situated encounters become modes of engaging broader cultural and geopolitical conditions. Within this framework, she approaches curatorial practice not solely as the production of exhibitions, but as the construction of relational infrastructures: spaces that enable dialogue, translation, and forms of connection across communities, histories, and systems of knowledge.

Born in Lanzhou along the Yellow River, Tong’s early experiences were shaped by the layered historical and geopolitical conditions of Gansu, a region marked by routes of exchange, state development, extraction, and uneven modernisation. These experiences fostered an early awareness of how geography, infrastructure, and historical narratives shape cultural identity and spatial memory, and continue to inform her engagement with material memory, cultural translation, and the ways histories are embedded within space.

She received her BA in Fine Arts from the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. Since the age of sixteen, Tong has lived and worked across multiple cultural environments, including Argentina, Italy, Australia, and Germany. These transnational experiences have shaped her ongoing interest in translation, migration, and the negotiation of meaning across diverse social, linguistic, and geopolitical contexts.

Her curatorial methodology understands space not as a fixed artefact, but as an evolving relational condition shaped through human interaction, memory, movement, and cultural exchange. Through this perspective, Tong investigates how curatorial practice can function as an infrastructural form that sustains long-term relations between people, places, and temporalities.
