Plastic bottles
2018
The toilet seems to be flooded soon. The floor is almost covered with the water which is spewing out continuously from the tube, the toilet, and the bath drain. However, there is some strangeness in the scene, the light reflection on the water is too sharp and the shape when the water is forming on the ground is so intensive. Is it really a flood? With a closer observation, you can see that the flood is actually formed by a number of twisted plastic water bottles.
Through observation during artists’ life in Bologna, she found that the plastic water bottle is one of the largest garbage sources during everyone's daily life since almost nobody carries a personal water bottle and the water from the tube is not clean enough to drink. So that she chose the plastic water bottles as a representation of the action of polluting in a human society. And flood is a symbol of damaging. What is damaging? Is it the flood, the plastic water bottles or the consumption of plastic water bottles? Maybe either of them or all of them? Therefore this work provides the audience a multi-layers of understanding and enough space for the audience to digest the content.
The work is related to everyone's daily life which can quickly build up a relationship with the audiences because the toilet is a daily life scene. The plastic water bottles are solid which creates a strong contradiction by presenting the liquid flood. The solid flood transformed the scene to an unrealistic solid moment which could be continued to the next second but it chooses to freeze at the present as if to show us the damage is happening and to let us imagine what greater disaster is going to occur.
